The Book Thief

I finished another book- -finally.  Immediately upon finishing "Thirteen Reasons Why", I started "The Book Thief"-by Markus Zusak, a recommendation by Tyson's aunt Michele.  I don't remember ever tackling a book of 550 pages, but I can say I did so now!

The story is about a girl living in Nazi Germany during World War II.  I love historical fiction, so this was my kind of read.  Most intriguing was the narrator- -Death.  It was interesting to consider Death's perspective on life.  Society's portrayal of The Grim Reaper makes Death's hunger for souls seem merciless and insatiable.  Not so, according to this book.  Death doesn't like taking souls any more than we like to lose them.

Zusak is another incredible author.  The story was very well written and made me feel the misery, fear, and sorrow that many Germans may have felt during that time.  I loved the characters and their interactions with each other.  The innocent, not-sought-after love story is beautiful and heartbreaking.  The entire story line is flawless.  Thanks to Michele's white-out, I didn't have to wince past the foul language (therefore I can't warn you about it- -all I can say is there was frequent white-outing).

At the end of the book, I thought, "this would be a really good movie". So I googled it out of curiosity and found this trailer.  I looked on Amazon.com to see if it was there and it's not, so I'm not sure if it was, in fact, made into a movie?  I'm going to call Hastings and find out.  It would be a great one to see.

If you like historical fiction, I highly recommend this book.

  1. Oh I loved this book. I thought the end was so beautifully sad, it almost made me cry.
It did take a long time to read though.
