So in the past I mentioned that when it rains, it pours. Well when it pours, all is flooded and washed away.
Wiped out.
Wiped out.
No, our life hasn't turned that bad this week. But almost =0)
Tuesday night Tyson had intramural basketball at the college and I followed along to support him. He was feeling pretty good and playing quite well- -all was great. Until he went up for a "put back" and felt a big POP in his left knee when he came back down. He didn't really land awkward and he didn't land on anyone else- -it was just kind of weird. He could feel it was tender, so he walked off the court and tried to stretch it and mess with it to see what was going on. Nothing. Until he sat down..........and couldn't get back up. He couldn't straighten his knee to stand. We hung around and finished watching the game and when it was finished a couple of his buddies helped him to Rhett Fieldsted's car and we brought him home. Rhett is going in to Physical Therapy so he took a minute to check Tyson's knee out. Tyson told him where it hurt the most and Rhett was able to tell him that something happened to his meniscus.
He was right. The next day, Wednesday, we went to the Wellness Center on campus for a doctor to check him out. The doctor bet that Tyson's meniscus was torn and folded over, acting like a wedge between his joint, prohibiting it form straightening.
He was right too. He sent us to an Orthopedic Surgeon at Logan Regional and the surgeon bet the same thing. He took some x-rays and an MRI and that was the exact problem. They scheduled Tyson for surgery the next day, Thursday.
Surgery was quick. The doctor was able to repair Tyson's meniscus and that was a huge relief. If it would have been damaged beyond repair, they would have removed it and replaced it later with a donated meniscus. Tyson recovered quickly from the anesthesia and our hospital stay was just under 4 hours.
We were surprised that such a seemingly non-harmful fall could cause such a serious injury. But then we told the doctor that Tyson had been a baseball catcher in high school and the doctor told us, "you can't expect not to have knee problems if you're a catcher!" He said that Tyson's meniscus has likely been torn for some time- - -it just took one final blow to finish it off. So here we are. Tyson is not yet 24 1/2 years old and has already had both of his knees operated on.
Here is his leg before surgery- -unable to straighten.
Ha ha! He is too tall for the hospital gown, but on top of that, he was left wide open and vulnerable since he couldn't straighten his knee =0). We found him a blanket.
Nice nurse. Shaving Tyson's knee.
Awesome Anesthesiologist. Mixing Tyson's surgery margarita.
Back from surgery.
At the Walgreen's drive-thru, waiting for his Lortab.
Re-united with his best buddy.
All of Tyson's family came to support him. Greg came early Thursday morning and he and Brandon gave Tyson a blessing before his surgery. Surgery was at 9:00 a.m. and Greg stayed home with Teryn so I could be there. We got back home around 1:00 p.m. and just laid low the rest of the day. It was Breanna's birthday so we had dinner with cake and ice cream. Michelle made it around 7:00 p.m. and spent a little time. The rest of the week until just one hour ago today, family has been in and out checking on us. We are so grateful to have such love and support from our wonderful family. Clichè as it may be, we don't know what we would do without them.
So Tyson is on crutches for the next 6 weeks with a gnarly knee brace. I would be lying if I said I'm sad about it. Of course I'm sad that he's hurting and I'm sad that he's uncomfortable, but I'm looking forward to having him home. Life gets so busy- -I'm going to savor every minute I have to be with him and take care of him.
What a week is right! We'll be praying for a quick recovery...but not too quick;)
ReplyDeleteWhhhaaaat the!!! Holy moly! That's insane! I hope Tyson recovers quickly! Have his professors been cool about getting him assignments and homework? Or is he having to fend for himself and rely a ton on classmates for notes? Enjoy your time with him! It's good and bad news, right? Haha. Sending you prayers! Love you! :0)
ReplyDeleteHoly cow! Crazy! Glad surgery went well, and hope that recovery does too. If you need ANYTHING let us know!
